Miss Nina

I recall the scent of white gardenias
And the smell of chalk board dust
She loved sweet, iced-cold tea,
But “with lemon,” she said, “to cut the sweet”… was a must!

Her favorite spot was resting in an old, white, wooden high chair
Near the kitchen window, you could find her sitting there
Watching and waiting for Cardinals and Robins to come along
And dine at her window-box feeder, giving a concert with real “tweets” and songs

Spending early mornings in the sun
She met them on Saturday’s for breakfast there
Grandma would peck on the window softly
If Blue Jay’s ate more than their fair share

You may have been lucky to know her, as “Miss Nina,”
Second Grade teacher at Malesus Elementary School
But to me she was more than a teacher
My Grandma, “Miss Nina,” personified the golden rule

She taught me to love, because Jesus first loved us
She taught me to share, to do good work, and to be nice
If she ever had to correct me, (which wasn’t very often)
She never had to tell me twice

She taught me to read and write before I entered first grade
Vocabulary words and Arithmetic flashcards… we reviewed in the Summer shade
Of an old Oak Tree where she churned homemade ice cream
A tasty reward for helping shell fresh butter beans

A regimen of praise and prayer
One tube of lipstick, a little powder, and just a touch of rouge
Her day began with just a few simple things
I cringe to think of all the money I’ve spent on makeup, jewelry and earrings!

She was such a sweet, sweet soul
No one could ever take her place
I know Heaven gained an Angel
When she entered into God’s rest and grace

And I would bet she is still teaching
In one of Heaven’s small classrooms
All she learned from painting on her heart
The gospels of Mark, Luke, John and Matthew

The Well

Where is the creativity that once moved my pen?
Why does my inkwell dry up again and again?
Have I forgotten my craft comes only from His Well
That my words will dry up, leaving me nothing to re-tell

When I fail to visit His Well, time and again
To restore the creative spirit found living within
One, claimed to be a Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ
Who died on a cross, paying the ultimate price

For the ink in my well, giving up His pen
So His words through me would come to life again
Telling of His wondrous love, His never-ending grace
How His mercies abound when I continually seek His face

But I must visit His Well time and again
To nourish the vine, of which He grafted me in
I must stay bound to the only source
That will nourish my craft

Drawing always from His Well before…drawing again, aft
To keep His creative spirit flowing through me
With words of life and love
And victory

Living out His word depends on my time spent
Drawing from the well of The Sacrament
Remembering His wounded body, that my sin pierced to a tree
How He willing gave up His life, for a sinner like me

So that these simple verses laid out in rhyme
Would speak to believers He prepared before time
To take heed to His words written for us to re-tell
And draw only from The One True Source, The Creator, The Well

Let Your Faith Make You Whole

When I am broken
When my spirit is crushed
Reveal to me Lord
The ways You love me so much

When my mind wanders
When my eyes can’t see
Beyond Your veil
Your protection covering me

I will trust You Lord
Your words written in red
My belief in Your promises
Confirms there is nothing to dread

When I contemplate questions
With answers unknown
My hope breeds faith eternal
I know I am not alone

When my heart is anguished
When I can’t be consoled
I cry out to Jesus
And my faith makes me whole

Is There Anybody Out There?

Is there anybody out there
That has happened upon these words?

Is there anybody out there
Who would think it NOT absurd

To ask YOU for encouragement
In the trying times we face

Is there anybody out there
Thinking this thought of mine misplaced?

Is there anybody out there
Offering to lend an ear?

Is there anybody out there
Willing to listen…and REALLY HEAR

The struggles of a Mother
Raising a family all alone

Is there anybody out there
If so, sweetheart, please come home!

Is there anybody out there
Living the trials of a Father

Who’s tireless efforts to provide for his family
Seem OVERWHELMING…so why should he bother!

Is there anybody out there
That needs a hug, a warm embrace

IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE IN THIS GOD-FORSAKEN PLACE???

Who’s heart is bursting at the seams
Who even cares what all this means?

Is there anybody out there
Who could use a friend today?

Or have you looked around and found
You YOURSELF pushed them all away

Is there anybody out there
Who needs a kiss upon the lips?

Or has life gotten in the way of passion
And you’re just too tired to give a flip!

Is there anybody out there
Praying for another

Father, brother, sister, Mother
Friend or enemy, foe or lover?

Is there anybody out there
Who ponders deep within their heart

Questions with difficult answers
While their lives are falling apart?

Then let me be the one to tell you
Of the Savior’s love

Sent to earth by The Holy Father
From Heaven up above

To live the righteous life
That we all strive for everyday

The Father knew we needed a personal guide
To help us along the way

So when your heart is heavy
When you feel sad and all alone

When worry overtakes your thoughts
Leaving them bare and prone

To Satan’s attacks on your mind
The whispering little lies he tells

Because his misery needs some company
And it’s You he is trying to sell

A bill of goods, a tasty treat,
Another drink please…on the rocks!

The effectiveness of his weapons include
The whole barrel, lock and stock!

And he aims not just at your heart
He aims straight for your head

He knows if he can control your mind
Then you are already dead!

So when you question, who’s out there?
And when you think no one cares

Know there is one named “King Jesus”
Who will always meet you there

In your time of need
When you’re feeling lost and alone

Sweetheart…JESUS IS THE ONLY LIFELINE OUT THERE!
HE IS THE ONLY WAY TO MAKE IT HOME!

Are You in Tune?

I know these words are not my own
I’m amazed by the Father’s hand
Carrying my pen across the page
Allowing me to help us both understand

The meaning of life and why we were born
Is to carry the torch of our faith
To our brothers and sisters caught up in the storms
Of life and Liberty and the pursuit of happiness

Yes, our struggles will continue
When we think we know what’s best
We say that we pray…but do we get down on our knees
Before asking The Father to fulfill or needs?

We shoot bullet prayers often… straight up to the sky
We talk to God while driving in the car
But when was the last time we fell before His throne
Instead of just wishing on His stars

We question, we ponder, how do we know when He answers our prayers?
Do we think we should get a vision or a sign?
When His answer comes you’ll know deep down in your gut
Not just at the corners of your mind

There are times we believe we’ve received answered prayer
Maybe regarding a relationship, a problem or a job?
Only to find our signals got crossed and
We must change the channel, turn the page…twist the knob

To get on the right frequency to receive His Word
And continually make the right choice
So we don’t get mixed signals we must kneel when we pray
To stay in tune with The Father’s voice

Hiding Place

Bless me with Your peace Lord God
Calm my anxious heart

Spare me from going down to the pit
For up from the grave You brought

All those who believe in Your name
Those who put their trust in You

Protect me from trouble, deliver me
For my hiding place is in You

Yes! The eyes of The Lord are on the righteous
His ears are attentive to our cry

The face of The Lord is against those who do evil
He will cut off the memory of them when we die

The Lord stands close to the brokenhearted
He saves those whose spirits are crushed

All of His laws are meant for good
His precepts are always just

So we stand in faith and acknowledge You, Lord
For You are The King of Kings

Master, Jehovah, Mighty God
Holy One, creator of all things

Yes! You O’ God are my refuge, my strength
I forever put my trust in You

Protect me, deliver me, keep me safe
For my hiding place is in You

Vital Necessity

You O’ God are a vital necessity
We seek you with all of our heart
We share this quest for you O’ God
With others who know you and are a part
Of your Kingdom
Your riches in glory
Your majestic Heavenly home
Those who love and revere You O’ God
Those complete
In the fullness of Shalom
In the peace that passes all human understanding
In tranquility, safety and rest
In the perfect fullness of wholeness and health
Contentment in You O’ God
Finds us blessed
We trust You O’ God
We commit our ways to You, Lord
For you make the righteousness
Shine like the dawn
The justice of our cause
Like the noonday sun
The desires of our heart
Delight in You with song
So we seek you O’ God
You alone quench our thirst
You alone are our master, our king
We seek You O’ God, our Heavenly Father
Majestic Creator, Mighty King of all Kings

The Next Right Thing

When life veers off Your path that is best
Help me Lord, to take the next right step

In unsettling times, when I don’t know what to do
Help me Lord Jesus, to make the next right move

When life’s journey leads to a crowded intersection
Point me Jehovah, in the right direction

To the next best thing that I should do
That will continue to bring me closer to You

If patience is needed, Father, help me to wait
Keep me from making the same mistakes

Give me a vision, when I see a clouded view
Help me God, keep me, hold me tighter to You

For Your ways are higher than my ways
Your thoughts higher than my thoughts (Isaiah 55:9)

Renew my mind Lord, make me think
Contemplate the next right thought

When I am weary Lord, when sleep won’t come
Give me rest, make my body succumb

To the next best thing that I should embrace
That guarantees I will see Your face

When frustrations come screaming, loud and bold
Help me to choose best, what I should hold

Forever placing my trust in You
So the next right thing is what I do.

The Captain

Have you been riding in someone else’s wake
Taking in the scenic view
Coasting along in their dredged out path
Letting them do all the work for you?

You watch them navigate through shallow, murky, depths
White capping swells, a strong salty breeze
Even forging on through torrential rains
Head first into uncharted seas

Don’t you think it’s time
To sail outside their wake
To test the waters on your own?

Be the captain of your own ship
Make it or break it!
Take over the helm…right or wrong!

Stop listening to the gale force winds
They’ll howl and scare you
Play tricks on your mind

Make you think you should turn around
Follow along with the crowd
Behind

But if you’ll batten down the hatches
Secure your ropes and
Steer into

The gale force winds aren’t so scary
They’ll be the force
That is guiding You

Through Life’s uncharted waters
Providing you the power
To forge ahead

Through stormy nights
When the wind and darkness
Tempt to kiss the water’s edge

You can expect tossing and turning
The winds of change
Will blow forward…then aft

Just keep God at the helm
As you Captain your ship
He’ll chart your destiny, your future, your path
